HICKORY, NC (WBTV) -

Josh Hexamer loves sports. His grandfather recently had an idea on how to make sure Josh, who was born with spina bifida which affects your spine and ability to walk, could try to play golf.

Josh's grandpa, Ricky Bentley, changed one of Josh’s crutches into a golf club.

For months, Josh has been playing actively, walking around with his custom-made club across tees at Hampton Heights Golf Club in Hickory.

“I really like playing,” the almost 8-year-old said as he showed off his putts, chips and drives. “Though, sometimes the sport can be frustrating.”

We could try to explain how this custom-made club works, but the video shows it best.

I went to Hickory Friday morning to meet Josh, his mom Dawn, grandpa Ricky, Mike Thurston, who is a golf pro, and golf club employee Rachel Hill, who are all people who have helped lift Josh up in really positive ways.

Josh and his twin sister, Alexandra, celebrate their birthday Saturday, August 12.
