Convicted felon charged with firearm possession in Iredell County

IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A convicted felon from New Jersey was charged in Iredell County with possession of a firearm when he was pulled over for a traffic violation Sunday.

Dwelon Edwards, 40, was driving a 2017 Jeep Cherokee on I-77 northbound when he was stopped, according to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office. When deputies searched his car, they found a loaded handgun, extra magazines and a box of ammunition.

When researching the handgun to find out if it was stolen, deputies say they learned that Edwards had been convicted of a felony in New Jersey.

Edwards was charged with one count of felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and given a $25,000 bond. According to deputies, Edwards said he was on his way from Savannah, Georgia to Jersey City, New Jersey.

Edwards had previously been convicted of various drug and weapon related charges, including possession of drugs on school property and unlawful possession of weapons.
