HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

Highway 73 was closed Monday afternoon after a tree fell across the road, bringing down power lines with it.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. on Hwy 73 near McGuire Nuclear Station Road. Duke Energy was working to remove the tree and repair the lines, but said the road would be closed for several hours.

Drivers were asked to use caution in the area and avoid the scene if possible. Firefighters said traffic on Hwy 73 was "a nightmare" while they diverted traffic down Beatties Ford Road.

Just before 5:30 p.m., firefighters said the road had been reopened and that repairs would be made at a later time.

There is no word on what may have caused the tree to fall.
