CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Two people were killed when their car ran off the road and struck a tree in northeast Charlotte Sunday morning.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the single-vehicle wreck occurred around 1:39 a.m. in the 3400 block of Hubbard Road near Haybridge Road.

Police say 40-year-old Larry Lee Lockhart Jr. and 42-year-old Tabitha Denise Staton were both killed in the crash.

Lockhart was driving a 2012 Dodge Challenger when he lost control and drove off the right side of the road, CMPD said. Officers said the vehicle then went down an embankment before striking a tree on the passenger side.

Speed is a factor in this crash, police say. Officers have not said whether alcohol was another factor.

If you have any information about the wreck, you're asked to call Crime  Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
