Mecklenburg County, NC -

A man was arrested Friday after police say he brought items used to make a bomb to the Cornelius Police Department to show how easy it was to make a bomb. The town hall and police department were evacuated for some time due to the incident.

According to the Cornelius Police Department, 29-year-old John Patrick Rees reportedly wanted to show officers in the police department the items in his vehicle. The items were not assembled.

Catawba Avenue was shut down and officers said traffic was being diverted in the area due to a "situation." The Rite Aid and the Cashion's convenience store on South Main Street were also evacuated for safety reasons. Police tweeted about the incident shortly before 2:30 p.m.

Police said Catawba Avenue reopened around 3:46 p.m.

Cornelius police said the FBI and CMPD's bomb squad responded to the incident. Police said if the items and powders found in Rees' car were combined, then they "could have become potentially explosive."

Officers went to Rees' apartment on Sterling Bay Lane to clear his residence for more suspicious items.

Police have not said whether Rees will face any charges.
