JCSU Football Set To Open 2017 Fall Camp

Charlotte, N.C. (Aug. 3, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University football team will begin preparations for the 2017 season on Tuesday, August 8.

Under the helm of third-year head coach Kermit Blount, the Golden Bulls are slated for check-in on Sunday August 6. On Monday, August 7, a full day of team meetings will begin, as the Golden Bulls are set to receive information from the JCSU sports medicine staff, compliance office, and sports information staff.

On Tuesday, the team will take to the practice field for the first time as a complete unit, donning just helmets. Following the scheduled session, the team will break for dinner and resume with team meetings that evening.

Following another helmet-only practice on Wednesday, the Golden Bulls will practice Thursday and Friday in shells before donning full gear on Saturday, Aug. 13 through the first day of classes on August 17.

“We are ready to get started,” said Blount. “There is plenty of opportunity for our team to learn and to get better as we prepare for our home opener on Sept. 2 against Wingate.”

Blount and his staff will welcome a strong nucleus of returners back from a 2016 squad that finished 3-7 and 3-4 in CIAA play. Included in the veterans returning are first team All-CIAA safety Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.), honorable mention selection Basir Wright (Douglasville, Ga.) at defensive back and 2016 All-Rookie linebacker David Francis (Pompano Beach, Fla.). Thomas and Wright earned Preseason All-CIAA nods at the CIAA Football Media Day in Roanoke last month.

Also returning for JCSU is offensive lineman Raqwon Niles (Columbia, S.C.) and running back Braxton Gambrell (Seneca, S.C.). Niles received All-CIAA Honorable Mention honors in 2016 and Gambrell was an All-Rookie selection.

JCSU is set to open the 2017 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 2 against Wingate. The Bulldogs were picked to finish second in the South Atlantic Conference.

Kickoff against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Irwin Belk Complex.
