LINCOLN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A Lincoln County couple escaped from their burning home Wednesday morning with the help of deputies.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the fire occurred around midnight at a home in the 6600 block of NC 27 Highway West. A motorist saw flames coming from a window air conditioning unit and from the side of the home, deputies said.

The sheriff's office said a deputy on scene knew that a couple lived in the home. Deputies were able to enter the home by removing a dead bolt and found a woman inside who seemed to be disoriented.

The woman was carrying a baseball bat because she thought someone was breaking into her home. Deputies told the woman that her home was on fire and helped get her to safety. Her husband then came into the kitchen and was told to get out the home, the sheriff's office said.

The couple was treated on scene by Lincoln County Emergency Medical Services for smoke inhalation.

Deputies have not said what caused the fire.

No deputies or responders were injured in the fire.
