One dead, another hurt in northeast Charlotte wreck

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A person killed in a wreck in northeast Charlotte Sunday evening has been identified by police as 22-year-old Brandon Bowen. 

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the wreck happened around 5:53 p.m. in the 10900 block of Mallard Creek Road near Galloway Road. 

Officers say a 2004 Ford Mustang ran off the road and struck a tree. The driver of the Mustang, later identified as Bowen, was pronounced dead on scene. The front seat passenger went to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. 

"Excessive speed is suspected as a contributing factor in this crash," CMPD says. No other vehicles were involved.

Police say they are investigating whether impairment was a contributing factor.
