A body was found in the trunk of a car Thursday morning during a north Charlotte homicide investigation.

Police say the first victim, 65-year-old Jacquline Gordon-White, died at a home in the 9000 block of Red Clay Lane around 4:40 a.m. Police initially responded to the home for an assault with a deadly weapon call.

A short time later, police say they found a male inside the trunk of a car driven to the hospital by an injured woman who reported the incident.

CMPD says they are searching for a suspect, 40-year-old Vurnel Smith Jr., who is "dangerous" and possibly traveling in a 2017 black Honda CRV with NC license plate: PAS-9116.

According to neighbors, Smith Jr.'s fiance's parents were the ones who were killed.

“There has never been an argument over there that I’ve heard. I have never heard them get loud,” neighbor Shaquana Woolfork said.

People in the community say Smith and his fiance moved in a couple of months ago, and his fiance's parents arrived after.

"They were good people. Mrs. Jackie would come over and talk. Even the suspect would come over and talk. They would sit on their porch and cookout," Woolfork said.

A neighbor told WBTV that he had briefly spoke with Smith Jr. "He was quiet, he stayed to his self. He wasn’t no violent person," the neighbor said. "I liked the dude, he was cool. He used to be out there cutting grass. We used to always kick it."

The neighbor says Smith came over to visit on Wednesday.

'And he said 'man I want you to start cutting my grass.' I said why. He said 'I’m moving.' I said you’re moving? I said why. He said 'my and my wife – we ain’t getting along."

The neighbor told WBTV he urged Smith to get counseling to work it out.

"He said 'no I don’t want that. I’m leaving.' That’s the last time I talked to him" the neighbor said.

Police say at this time they do not believe there are any other victims.

"You never know what's going on behind closed doors, but it's sad to see," the neighbor said.

Smith Jr. was charged with first-degree sex offense and first-degree rape in 2015, but those charges are pending. He was also convicted of driving while impaired in 1997.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 immediately, or detectives at 704-432-TIPS. The public can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Gordon-White's family has been notified of her death. The name of the male victim has not been released.
