Mount Holly house fire intentionally set, man facing attempted murder charges

MOUNT HOLLY, NC (WBTV) -

A Mount Holly man was arrested for reportedly setting his ex-wife's home on fire Sunday, police said. 

According to the Mount Holly Police Department, 42-year-old Derrick Leonard Higdon was charged with first-degree arson, felony breaking and entering, attempted first-degree murder and animal cruelty. 

The Mount Holly Fire Department said the the fire occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at a home in the 100 block of Farm Springs Drive Sunday. The Mount Holly Police Department said the house was heavily damaged in the fire.

A woman who lived in the home told police her ex-husband allegedly forced his way into the home and set a fire while she was inside. Police said the woman was able to escape the home and was not injured. 

A family pet died in the fire, officers said. 

On Sunday, firefighters said four people and their pets were displaced in the fire.

Higdon was taken to the Gaston County Jail where he was placed on a $1,000,000 bond.
