"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Scott Dempsey.
Recently new Charlotte Mecklenburg School superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox sat down with the editorial board. He was upfront about the challenges the district faces and how his first week on the job has gone.
Wilcox mentioned the unfavorable comments he received concerning his controversial personnel appointments and the big raises he gave out. That coverage quickly reminded him that being a leader comes with criticism.
We were encouraged to hear him say he plans to outlive that criticism because CMS has gone through five superintendents over the past decade. Right now, the system needs strong and steady leadership to get the job done. Besides getting an effective teacher in front of every student - strong principals in schools and beefing up technology in the classrooms - One of the first things Wilcox said he will address is the inequities visible at schools.
The new top educator says he wants people to have a good feeling when they walk into all CMS schools. We agree and we will be watching. We believe no school should lack resources or curb appeal because of the student population or school's zip code. We say get to work Dr. Wilcox! Students are depending on you.
