Major League Soccer has selected Charlotte as one of the cities for a potential expansion team. Securing this franchise would require public funding to renovate Memorial Stadium into a 20,000-seat facility. The Mecklenburg County Commission must approve their portion, which would come from its general fund, and is awaiting a decision on the City of Charlotte's proposed share, $43.5 million.
While we believe professional sports have been a sound investment for the city, a major league soccer team would enhance the city and surrounding area just as the Panthers and Hornets have. However, we would like to see the City fulfill their promise of affordable housing, upward mobility and create jobs as outlined after the riots in Charlotte. We just want our city leaders to make sure their priorities are where they need to be.
