Jackknifed tractor-trailer shuts down Burke County interstate

BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A man was seriously injured when he was struck by a tractor-trailer on a Burke County interstate Sunday. 

Burke County EMS tweeted that the accident occurred around 9:50 a.m. on Interstate 40 eastbound at mile marker 115. 

The jackknifed tractor-trailer appeared to be blocking several lanes of traffic. 

According to Highway Patrol, the man's vehicle was stopped on the shoulder of the road. The man then walked into the road and got struck by the semi-truck, according to troopers.  

Troopers said the man who was struck was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. 

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt, Highway Patrol says.

The road was closed for nearly an hour and a half before reopening around 11:30 a.m.
