STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

An 8-year-old boy involved in a crash in Iredell County last week died at the hospital two days after the incident, according to officials.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Friday on the 1900 block of Salisbury Highway at the intersection of Third Creek Road in Statesville.

Troopers say 28-year-old Daniel Chase Bowlin turned right onto Third Creek Rd then attempted to make an illegal U-turn. That's when a tractor trailer struck the car from behind.

Bowlin, who is the boyfriend of the 8-year-old's mother, along with the mother, another adult, and an 11-year-old girl, were all taken to the hospital. All have since been released except for Bowlin, who is expected to be released Friday.

The 8-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, was also taken to the hospital. He died from his injuries on Sunday.

Troopers say they expect to charge Bowlin with the boy's death when he is released from the hospital.
