Man charged with murder nearly two weeks after wife's death

A Charlotte man has been arrested after police say he killed his wife in Charlotte's University City area earlier this month.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers were called to the 5400-block of Dusty Trail Road on Friday, July 7 around 7:59 p.m. to the report of an unresponsive woman inside a home. Investigators say the woman, identified as 35-year-old Heidi May Morton, was pronounced dead by medical officials.

Detectives worked with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office and determined that Morton was the "victim of a homicide."

According to police, her husband, 35-year-old Alton Ulysses Morton Jr. voluntarily came to police headquarters Wednesday where he was interviewed by detectives. He was then charged with murder and has been transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.  

Investigators have not released any other details into the incident.
