Yoan Moncada & Brad Goldberg Recalled to Chicago
Infielder Jake Peter Promoted to Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham
(ROCHESTER, NY) -- Charlotte Knights second baseman Yoan Moncada and right-handed pitcher Brad Goldberg have both been officially recalled by the Chicago White Sox today. Additionally, infielder Jake Peter has been promoted to Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham today. Charlotte’s roster now features 24 active players.
Ranked as the number one prospect in Major League Baseball by MLB.com and Baseball America, Moncada hit .282 (87-for-309) with 57 runs scored, nine doubles, three triples, 12 home runs, 36 RBIs, 17 stolen bases, and a .377 on-base percentage in 80 games with the Charlotte Knights this season. A native of Abreus, Cuba, he currently ranks fourth in the IL in runs scored (57), and fifth in stolen bases (17). He was elected as an International League All-Star this season and participated in the 2017 SiriusXM Futures Game on Sunday, July 9 in Miami, FL.
Earlier this season (May 1), the Chicago White Sox named Moncada as their Minor League Player of the Month for the month of April. During the first month of the season, the 22-year-old hit .314 (27-for-86) with 16 runs scored, four home runs, seven RBIs, and six stolen bases in 21 games for the Knights. He earned International League Batter of the Week honors on May 8 after hitting .500 (11-for-22) with eight runs scored, two home runs, and four RBIs from May 1-7.
The 22-year-old has earned a number of accolades over his professional career. Last season, Moncada was named Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America and was a Carolina League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star. He was also named Most Valuable Player of the 2016 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on July 10, 2016 in San Diego, CA. In 2015, the slugger earned South Atlantic League Post-Season All-Star honors.
Goldberg, 27, posted a 3-1 record with four saves and a 2.58 ERA in 28 games (38.1 IP) with the Charlotte Knights this season. Today’s promotion to Chicago is the second of the season for Goldberg. He was recalled to Chicago on June 3 and made one appearance (0.1 IP, 4 R, 4 ER). Last season, Goldberg represented the Knights at the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game in Uptown Charlotte, NC.
Peter, 24, was hitting .270 (77-for-285) with 35 runs scored, 12 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 21 RBIs, and four stolen bases in 75 games with the Barons this year. He was selected by the White Sox in the seventh round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft. In 62 games with the Knights last season, the Mason City, Iowa native hit .259 (59-for-228) with 30 runs scored, 13 doubles, two home runs, 24 RBIs, and three stolen bases.
For the season, the Knights have promoted 12 players to Chicago. RHP Tommy Kahnle (April 6), catcher Kevan Smith (April 13 & May 10), outfielder Willy Garcia (April 14 & May 2), RHP Mike Pelfrey (April 22), RHP Chris Beck (April 25), LHP David Holmberg (May 4), RHP Gregory Infante (May 15), RHP Tyler Danish (May 26), RHP Juan Minaya (May 26 & June 26), outfielder Adam Engel (May 27 & June 20), are the 10 others who have all received promotions this year.
