Deangela Ruffin says the first day of school for her 6-year-old son on Monday went pretty well, at first. Her son goes to a year-round school at Graham Elementary and Monday was his first day in the first grade.

On Monday afternoon, Ruffin waited outside her apartment for the bus to bring her son home but before the bus arrived, her son arrived in her friend's car. That friend, Ruffin says, said she spotted the boy walking alone along Lafayette Street, which is located on the other side of town.

It turns out the school bus dropped the 6-year-old off at the wrong spot. "He was crying and frightened when he got home," Ruffin said. Ruffin then went to the school for answers.

"He could have been hit by a car or kidnapped," she said. Officials could not tell her what happened and they say they're not exactly sure either.

There was another adult on board the bus along with the driver at the time of the incident.

Ruffin says the driver and the second adult cried and apologized for what happened. Those adults have not been identified.

School officials are looking into the situation to determine what happened and to make sure procedures are in place so a similar incident won't happen again.

"It is extremely rare that we have such incidents occur in our school system and we are most thankful the child is safe," Greg Shull said, who is a spokesperson with Cleveland County Schools.

Shull added, in a written statement, that officials cannot comment specifically on the case while the investigation is ongoing but says the school "will continue to do everything we can to make sure this doesn't happen again for that family or any family in our school system.

Meanwhile, Ruffin says her son will not be riding the bus for the time being and hopes to find out soon what exactly happened.
