Driver charged in Sunday's deadly northwest Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A driver involved in a deadly motorcycle crash in northwest Charlotte Sunday evening has been charged. 

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on Mount Holly Road at Rhyne Road, which turns into Sonoma Valley Drive.

Wednesday, police announced 23-year-old Marielena Del Ro Cocinero was being charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle crash that killed a motorcyclist, 38-year-old Steven Lamont McKinney.

Police say a Toyota Venza pulled out into the intersection and was struck by the motorcycle. 

"After gathering information and evidence during the investigation, detectives determined that excessive speed by motorcycle rider, Steven Lamont McKinney, was not a contributing factor in the crash," police say.
