Whether it's inside gas pumps or ATM machines, skimmer devices are popping up around the country and Charlotte Mecklenburg Police are warning the public to be aware.

Police say crooks attach skimmer devices to electronic machines that dispense cash or process debit and credit cards.

They say gas pump skimmer is the biggest trend.

"This is not a local problem. It's a federal - national problem so to speak where we believe people involve in these type of scams travel state to state," said Lt Tom Barry. "The police department needs the community to be aware. If you see somebody that's not an authorized Dept of Agricultural employee or work for the gas station or convenience store to call us and let us know that you see someone tampering with machines."

Investigators say they need people to be an extra set of eyes.

They also have words of advice for you.

Investigators say don't use debit cards when paying for gas because you'll expose your PIN number. They say a credit card gives you more protection from fraud.

And, Detective Kevin Stuesse adds, "Use gas pumps that are mostly right in front of the center of the gas station or right in front of the window because usually they're targeting outside pumps."
