CORNELIUS, NC (WBTV) -

Part of Interstate 77 in Cornelius was closed for a time Wednesday morning due to a tractor-trailer accident.

Officials say around 2:22 a.m., a tractor-trailer failed to stop in time, slamming into another tractor-trailer on I-77 northbound at Exit 28, Catawba Avenue. Both lanes of I-77 were reopened by 6:15 a.m.

The Huntersville Fire Department says a saddle tank carrying diesel fuel was ruptured as a result of the accident, leaking between 100 and 150 gallons of fuel.

The driver that failed to stop was cited, according to officials on scene.

"Motorists should take Exit 28 (Catawba Avenue) to northbound N.C. 115. Continue to Griffith Street and head west to get back on I-77 North," the North Carolina Department of Transportation previously advised.
