Charlotte is one of the fastest growing economies in the country with a low unemployment rate and plenty of affordable housing according to recent reports. But, when taking a closer look, the job market in Charlotte seems lop-sided and the definition of "affordable housing" seems off.
We see a lot of high-paying jobs in the financial sector and plenty of luxury apartments being built, but the opportunities for the middle class aren't so obvious. Without jobs for middle income families, the disparity between Charlotte's haves and the have-nots continues to grow.
As our leaders work to attract employers to the region, we encourage more focus on those opportunities. As our educational institutions work to prepare students for the future, we encourage more focus on building a skilled workforce that those kinds of employers need.
Charlotte's population growth and economic prosperity has made this region one of the hottest areas in the country and we'd like to see that positive momentum continue with improved opportunities for everyone. If we stay focused on giving all of our citizens a path for upward mobility, the entire community benefits.
