A Huntersville doctor accused of sharing explicit child-pornography videos and photographs with undercover police in 2015 pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court before friends and family and faces at least 10 years in prison.

Dr. David Shope, a hematologist-oncologist, faced one count of transporting child-pornography photos and video. He entered his plea to U.S. Magistrate Judge David Cayer. Sentencing will take place at a later date.

According to documents, the 43-year-old Shope shared sexually explicit videos and photographs involving children under the age of 12. Some of the children shown were toddlers. As a result, the 43-year-old Shope faces up to 20 years in prison.

Shope was on staff at Southern Oncology Specialists in Huntersville at the time of his arrest on multiple child-pornography charges. He is no longer listed on the firm’s website.

Documents tied to the upcoming plea indicate that on at least three occasions in 2015, Shope shared multiple videos with an undercover CMPD detective. The videos included explicit sexual activity involving children as young as 3 with other children – and in some cases with adults.

When police raided Shope’s home in September 2015, Shope admitted an interest in child pornography that dated back several years, documents say.

A search of his computers revealed that Shope went on one chat room posing as a mother with a young daughter who was sexually interested in other females and daughters, and solicited photos, documents say.
