CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - There is a burglar on the loose on Charlotte's west side. Seven businesses have been broken into recently - all within the same general area - and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD) believes it's the work of just one man.
At 4:23 a.m., we see a hooded man on surveillance with a sledgehammer breaking into Beauregard's restaurant on Freedom Drive.
"He knocks down one of the doors," says CMPD Detective Tori Roddey. "It's glass doors, and he knocks down the doors, so, of course, he's able to get in."
Unfortunately, we don't see him break down the doors, but we do see a curious site. He walks his sledgehammer back to his car for safe keeping.
Seconds later, he's inside the restaurant at the front counter, checking a small register for cash. There was nothing there.
Now we get a good look at his disguise - a white mask and hoodie.
He wanders around the counter to a larger register but has trouble getting the drawer open.
"Pretty much striking out. He basically breaks both registers to get in, but as you can see there was no money to be found," Detective Roddey said.
With the cupboards bare of cash, this crook doesn't steal anything. He just leaves $1,000 in damage to the restaurant.
CMPD believes he's had better luck at six nearby businesses.
"We have a series of robberies with pretty much the same type of vehicle - talking about a 4-door, dark-color sedan. And we're thinking it might all coincide with each other with this same robbery attempt."
