WBTV Speak Out Editorial: Do The Right Thing

l"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Scott Dempsey.

The shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott put Charlotte's police force under scrutiny across the country. The death sparked social unrest, outrage and prompted city council to take long overdue action in addressing the lack of affordable housing, workforce development and economic mobility.

Now, the Charlotte Citizens Review Board claims there was substantial evidence of error when Charlotte Mecklenburg Police concluded the fatal shooting of Scott was justified. We don't know exactly what the board found wrong with the investigation, but we do know the Scott family and CMPD will make their case to the 11 members of the board.

We say follow the process. The Citizens Review Board was set up back in 1997 to foster transparency, accountability and public trust. We encourage the board to do its job – and be thorough. If it concludes something was missed or overlooked - then city leaders should take it seriously and do the right thing.

We expect our elected leaders and police chief to pay attention and start preparing now for next steps. Because no matter the board's decision – we want peace for everyone in the Queen City.
