Monday morning started off with a literal bang for one Mount Holly resident.

Eastwood Drive resident Darby Carithers said he was woken up by the motion detector light outside of his home. He said it was around 4:30 a.m. when he and his wife spotted someone walking suspiciously around their Mount Holly neighborhood.

They thought he may have been carrying some items.

Carithers said his wife called the Mount Holly Police Department to let them know about the situation. Before the call ended, the suspicious person took off through their yard.

Carithers said he grabbed his gun and gave chase. He said he asked the person to stop running, but they refused. Carithers said it was at that moment he heard a bang and saw a muzzle flash come from the person. It was a gunshot.

“I wanted to shoot him. I really did, but I was worried about my neighbors,” explained Carithers.

The suspect was able to escape from the area. Law enforcement officers were called out to the site.

Mount Holly police confirmed multiple car break-ins were reported from the area following the incident, and one person reported a firearm missing from their vehicle.

Mount Holly Police Chief Don Roper said it is unclear whether the stolen firearm was used to fire the shot at Carithers. He said he does not advise civilians to chase suspected criminals after an alleged crime.

“It’s really not worth someone putting themselves in danger for a property crime, and I would further advise that folks really need to think about securing their firearms,” said Roper.

Police are investigating the situation, but no arrests have been made.

“I’m just glad it turned out the way it did cause it could have been a lot worse. It could have been me and him. It could have been a gun battle out here you know, " said Carithers.
