LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) - A second person has been charged in connection to a deadly June shooting at the Palmetto Place Apartment complex in Lancaster.
Demarcus Javontia Marsh, 24, was arrested in Columbia, SC, Friday on two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Police Chief Scott Grant said previously that a Subaru driven by Courtney McCain, 36, drove into the parking lot of the complex on June 29, and that someone inside the car started shooting.
McCain turned himself in around 4 a.m. the day after the shooting. He is charged with accessory after the fact of murder. Police said the Subaru was a loaner vehicle and has been recovered.
Rakeem Patterson, 21, and Markevis Foster, 22, were killed in the shooting. A third victim was shot in the leg and was expected to be OK.
Police say there was possibly one other person in the Subaru with Marsh and McCain. They say McCain was only driving the vehicle, and they are questioning him about who fired the gun.
Investigators have not said if they are still looking for that third person after Marsh's arrest. They did not release what type of gun was used.
Family members of Patterson and Foster say the two were best friends. They were reportedly playing cards outside of the Palmetto Place Apartments when the shooting happened.
A neighbor who was sitting on his front porch during the incident says the Subaru pulled into the complex, backed into a car, then opened fire in front of the apartment where Patterson and Foster were.
Family members of both victims say they were not in gangs, and they have no idea why someone would shoot at them. They were familiar with McCain, but do not know if there was any conflict.
"He didn't bother nobody, he was just trying to take care of his mother, his daughter, he's just a good kid, a real good kid," Angela Foster, Markevis Foster's mother, said.
Chief Grant said he does not know if the shooting is gang-related, and officers have not released a motive for the shooting.
"I'm taking it as if innocent people got hit," said Sheanita Cloud, Foster's cousin.
Grant says Foster was the victim of another shooting about four months ago but says this does not appear to be related.
Family members say Foster was a father of a 3-year-old girl and he was working in Richburg, South Carolina. Family members said Patterson was working in Charlotte and living with his mother in Lancaster. Neither of the families knew the third victim in the shooting.
