STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

Statesville will be getting a 1,020-acre business park, city officials announced at a conference Friday morning.

Larkin Regional Commerce Park, valued at $650 million, would potentially create 3,400 jobs over the next 10 to 15 years.

The park will include more than five million square feet of industrial development, and 750,000 square feet of commercial and retail space.

The site sits southeast of Statesville off I-77 at Exit 45.

"The potential is astounding," said Statesville Mayor Costi Kutteh," and it's taken ten years to get here."

This is actually a project first discussed ten years ago, but at that time, it was going to be much different than what was revealed today.

“Like the projects we have to the south, Langtree, Birkdale, Northlake, that was the thought at the time, in my mind this is a far superior opportunity," Kutteh added.

The economy stopped that project in its tracks, but the one revealed today will be more suited to manufacturing and retail development.

The mayor says projects like the improvement of the I-77 and I-40 interchange, and work at the Statesville Airport helped bring this about.

“And the new access leading from the airport all the way out to exit 45 which is right were this project will be," said Kutteh.

City officials say the park is poised to become the region's hub for industrial and advanced manufacturing and e-commerce.

Over the next several months, City officials and Larkin Regional Commerce Park developers will iron out a development agreement to determine appropriate zoning and restrictions for the property.

The Park will be architecturally controlled and the Keith Corporation has provided a drawing to demonstrate its intentions for high quality construction.

Larkin Regional Commerce Park developers will work with the City of Statesville, Statesville Regional Development and N.C. Commerce officials to recruit tenants for the property.
