CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV ) -

A 25-year-old woman accused of killing her 12-month-old son went before a judge on a first court appearance in Lenoir Thursday morning.

Heather Brewer, of Granite Falls, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Rodney Lee Brewer, Jr.

A week before Thursday's court appearance, authorities said they were alerted to possible physical child abuse on the baby. The next day, the infant died at a hospital in Charlotte.

On Monday, Brewer was arrested and charged. Court papers show Brewer has been declared indigent and was given a court-appointed attorney.

Few details have been released in the case. District Attorney David Learner would not comment.

In court, the charge was read to Brewer and she was told that if she is convicted the maximum possible penalty would be life in prison without parole. Brewer showed no emotion in the courtroom but did keep looking into the audience.

A probable cause hearing was set for July 27. She remains in jail under a bond of $1 million.
