CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Convenience store robberies in Charlotte are common. Very common. What's rare is when a crook with a gun steals nothing more than a candy bar. But, there's a lot more to this story.
From an overhead camera inside the Circle-K on University City Boulevard, we can see a clerk busy cleaning the coffee counter at 2:30 in the morning.
Through the windows, the clerk notices a man rushing to the front door.
"The guy has a bandana across his face, a hoodie over his head, gloves on," said CMPD Detective Tori Roddey.
The clerk saw a man dressed in light blue with a gun. Immediately, the clerk hid behind the coffee machine.
"Self-preservation kicked in for this young man, and he ducked, ducked behind the coffee area where he was at," the detective explained.
The crook never sees the clerk. He must have wondered where he went.
"The guy went behind the counter and even looked behind doors to see if he could find the clerk. No clerk there. But, while he's doing that, the clerk takes off out the front door," Detective Roddey said.
The clerk makes a quick escape out the front, while the crook grabs a single candy bar and follows him out.
"I'm thinking he saw the guy run out the door and that got his attention enough to scare him and say, 'this guy is going to call police.' He thought, 'I don't have time to wait around, I gotta go.'"
All he stole was a candy bar, but if caught, he can be charged with armed robbery. Can you help catch the sweet-tooth thief?
From a surveillance picture, it appears the crook is wearing eyeglasses under his mask.
