SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - Allen Richard Melton of Kannapolis was convicted on Wednesday in Rowan County Criminal Superior Court of felony failure to change address of a registered sex offender.
Melton admitted his status as a habitual felon and Judge Anna Mills Wagoner sentenced him to 58 months to 82 months in prison.
On May 13, 2016, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office conducted a sex offender address verification on Melton. A deputy noticed the residence appeared abandoned. A neighbor stated that the occupants had moved out approximately two weeks ago.
At that time, Melton approached the deputy and stated he had been evicted from the residence two weeks ago. On May 17, 2016, Melton came to the Sheriff's Office to fill out a change of address. Melton had not provided the change of address within the three business days as required by law.
Melton was previously convicted of felony breaking and/or entering, felony indecent liberties with a minor, and felony failure to notify address change, among other convictions.
Rowan County District Attorney Brandy Cook stated that she appreciated the joint effort of Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Suneson and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office. Cook stated that if her office had not prosecuted Melton as a habitual felon, he could have received as little as 15 months in prison.
