Knights Drop Wednesday’s Game to Mud Hens 4-1
Willy Garcia and Kevan Smith Record Two Hits Apiece in Game Two Loss
(TOLEDO, OH) -- Willy Garcia and Kevan Smith recorded two hits apiece, but the Charlotte Knights dropped game two of their three-game series to the Toledo Mud Hens by a score of 4-1 on Wednesday from Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH. Wednesday’s loss snapped a two-game winning streak by the Knights.
LHP Chad Bell (1-2, 1.25) gave up just six hits over six shutout innings to lead the Mud Hens to their first win of the series. Bell walked two batters and struck-out six en route to his first win of the 2017 season. Former Charlotte reliever Arcenio Leon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season. Leon was the losing pitcher in Tuesday’s opener.
The Knights tallied 10 hits on the night, but fell for the eighth time in nine road games this season. Garcia and Smith continued their hot hitting and paced the offense with two hits each. Third baseman Nicky Delmonico also stayed hot at the plate. The 24-year-old extended his hit streak to a season-high seven consecutive games. He’s now batting .324 on the season. Rymer Liriano drove in Charlotte’s only run of the game on an RBI groundout in the top of the eighth inning.
RHP Lucas Giolito (0-3, 6.63) was saddled with the game two loss after allowing four runs on five hits over five innings pitched. Giolito allowed a solo home run to Brendan Ryan in the fifth inning. Giolito, Chicago’s second best prospect as ranked by Baseball America, threw 83 pitches (52 for strikes).
LHP Brian Clark allowed two hits and one walk in his first appearance with the Knights in 2017. Clark, who began the season on Charlotte’s disabled list, did not allow a run in the sixth inning. RHP Zack Burdi struck-out two batters over two innings.
The two teams will conclude their series on Thursday with the finale of their three-game series. Charlotte RHP Tyler Danish (1-1, 2.00) gets the start against Toledo RHP Drew VerHagen (2-0, 2.40).
