JOHNSON C. SMITH: Golden Bulls To Compete in Famous Penn Relays

Golden Bulls Track and Field to Race in the Prestigious Penn Relays

Charlotte, N.C. (April 26, 2017)— The Johnson C. Smith University track and field teams will send a contingent of 12 athletes to take part in the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. April 27-29.

The JCSU men will have two runners compete in the 400m hurdles on Friday in Kyle Robinson (Levelland, Tex.) and Zavier Lawrence (Mandeville, Jamaica). JCSU also managed to qualify both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Robinson enters the 400H after finishing third in last week’s CIAA Championships with a 56.88. Lawrence also had good outing, finishing second with a 53.82.

In the 4x100 the team of David Ellis (Katy, Texas), Joshua Cunningham (Toronto, Ontario), Kelvin Simon (St. John’s, Antigua) and Robinson will seek to better their season-best time of 41.03 that was posted at the Aggie Invitational.  In the 4x400, Bryson Tucker (Burlington, N.C.) along with Robinson, Simon and Cunningham will race to improve their season-best 3:14.41 set at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational on March 25.

On the women’s side, Kianje Pollard (Penns Grove, N.J.) will race in the 400H on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. She finished second in the CIAA Championships last week with a 1:02.52

The 4x100 relay team of Sidney Marshall (Manchester, Jamaica), Mayah Edwards (Kingston, Jamaica), Pollard, and Kendra Clarke (Edmonton, Alberta), currently ranked 11th nationally, will look to improve on their CIAA Championship time of 46.05 set last week.

In the 4x400 relay, Pollard, Fellan Ferguson (Kingston, Jamaica), Domenique Julius-Williams (Oshawa, Ontario) and Clarke, also CIAA Champions, will attempt to better their 3:41.75, which is ranked third nationally.

Founded in 1895 and officially named The Penn Relay Carnival, the relays gained recognition as the world's first and largest track and field relay meet and is the nation's longest uninterrupted collegiate meet. The event has drawn top high school, college, and world-class athletes from around the globe and has been the scene of numerous American and world records.
