FIRST ALERT: Excessive heat warning through this evening


EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING now in effect for Memphis and all of Shelby, Desoto, Tipton and Crittenden counties through sunset. The warning extends north for all counties along the river in northeast AR and northwest TN. Heat index values will reach or exceed 110° in these areas. Be careful if you plan to be outside for long periods. Heat exhaustion or heat stroke can happen quick in these conditions. A Heat advisory has been extended through Saturday evening with highs in the mid 90s and heat index values from 105-110 degrees. There is a small chance of an isolated heavy downpour or thunderstorm this afternoon. The rain chance is only about 10 percent.

A heat advisory has been extended into Saturday. The heat index is expected to reach 105-110 in the afternoon. It will be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 90s and lows in the upper 70s. Still hot and humid Sunday with a small chance of an afternoon storm. Highs will be near 90 with overnight lows in the mid 70s.

Check on older family, friends, and neighbors to ensure they are staying cool and hydrated and be sure to have extra water and shade for outdoor pets.  

Memphis is keeping Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library open 24 hours a day to give people a place to escape the heat.
