NEWTON, NC (WBTV) -

A man is facing attempted murder charges for stabbing his wife in Newton Saturday morning.

According to the Newton Police Department, the stabbing happened in the 1200 block of East H Street Saturday morning. Upon arrival, police say they saw the 28-year-old female victim sitting on the street curb. Police say the female victim was holding some hair in her lap and was bleeding from the back of her head.

The victim told officers that “they’re in the basement, he tried to kill me,” police say.

Newton Police say the suspect, 37-year-old Rong Scott See, was being held down by the victim’s brother in the basement of the home until police arrived.

During the investigation, Newton Police learned the suspect and the victim are married and were in the process of separating after an argument earlier in the day.

Police say during the argument, See struck his wife in the back of the head with what was believed to be a “loas knife.”

Police say the female victim was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with serious injuries. The victim has since been released from the hospital.

According to the Newton Police Department, during questioning See confessed to trying to “kill his wife then was going to hang himself in the front yard.”

Newton Police arrested and charged See with attempted first-degree murder. See is being held in the Catawba County Detention Facility.

See had his first court appearance Monday and was given a $500,000 bond. See’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 8.
