A former Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who recently went missing in Mooresville was found dead on a golf course Thursday, Mooresville police say.

Michael Scott Bell, 40, last talked with family around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Police asked for the public's help in finding Bell Thursday, who was believed to be at risk due to recent health issues.

On Thursday morning, dozens of officers with multiple agencies searched an area near a Mooresville golf course where Bell was reportedly last seen. He was found dead a short time later.

Bell's body was spotted by a CMPD helicopter around midday on Thursday.

“Since we did have some indication that he had left on foot towards the golf course, it being such a big wide area, wooded area, we wanted to make sure we had all the resources available," said Mooresville Police Major Gerald Childress. “When the cloud cover lifted we were able to get a helicopter in the sky which actually assisted us in locating the gentleman.”

Police say officers are continuing to investigate but they don't believe Bell's death is suspicious.

“Upon initial locating him there was nothing that appeared to be suspicious at that point," Childress added. “Noting that we found on scene that would indicate foul play.”

Investigators are looking into the possibility that a medical condition played a role in Bell's death.

“Last month this gentleman did suffer some type of a health issue in the same area of the golf course, based on that health concern, we really wanted to make sure that we located that gentleman as quickly as possible," Childress said.  "I can’t go into detail about what that concern is at the moment, but we are aware that he did have another episode earlier, several weeks ago.”

The Mooresville Police Department issued a statement about Bell.

"Personnel from Mooresville Police, Mooresville Fire-Rescue, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and other area public safety agencies have concluded the search for the missing Mooresville resident, Michael Scott Bell," the statement read. "The outcome is not what we hoped but we thank all who assisted in the search or shared their concern for the responders and the Bell family. The investigation into the cause of his death is continuing."

CMPD says Bell was a former officer with the department, termed effective Dec. 3, 2016.
