Victim, suspect identified in Monroe shooting

MONROE, NC (WBTV) -

A man has been released from the hospital following a shooting in Monroe Wednesday.

Monroe police say they were called around noon to a shooting in the 2200 block of Wheaton Way, where they found a man who had been shot by a woman living at the home. 

The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Jason Daniel Cope of Lancaster, South Carolina. Officials say Cope was released from Carolinas Medical Center-Main. The suspect has been identified as 32-years-old Samantha Marie Byers. Byers was treated and released from Carolinas Medical Center-Union, police say. 

"It is currently not clear as to the relationship and circumstances surrounding the incident," police say. 

The city of Monroe said that a three-year-old child was inside the residence at the time of the shooting. The child was not injured, officials say. 

So far, no charges have been filed in this shooting.

No names have been released.
