LANCASTER COUNTY, SC (WBTV) -

Four people have been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed a vacant Lancaster County home in March.

According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the fire occurred around 2:15 a.m. at a home in the 1300 block of Cedar Pines Lake Road on March 8.

Deputies say the home has been vacant for several months following the death of the homeowner.

Deputies identified the four suspects as 55-year-old John Timothy Barton, 29-year-old Dustin Lee Barton, 27-year-old Chasity Lynn Hughes and 43-year-old Michael Anthony Hughes.

According to the sheriff’s office, Timothy Barton is the deceased homeowner’s son and owns interest in the home.

Deputies say Timothy Barton offered Dustin Barton and Michael Hughes a portion of the insurance proceeds if they burned the home.

Michael Hughes and Dustin Barton tried to set the home on fire in January or February but was unsuccessful, the sheriff’s office says. Last Wednesday, Chasity Hughes drove Dustin Barton to the home and he successfully set the residence on fire, deputies say.

Dustin Barton was charged with two counts of second-degree arson and one count of burning personal property to defraud an insurer. Michael and Chasity Hughes were each charged with second-degree accessory before the fact of arson. Timothy Barton was charged with second-degree burning personal property to defraud an insurer and second-degree conspiracy to commit arson.

Dustin Barton and Chasity Hughes were arrested Tuesday. Tim Barton and Michael Hughes were arrested Wednesday.

Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile released this statement:

“A Chester County Sheriff’s Office investigator received information concerning this fire and passed it along to us. He assisted our investigators in following up on the information, and we were able to arrest the four people responsible for the fire within a matter of days.  I appreciate his help and the hard work of our investigators in solving this case.”

Deputies say Dustin Barton is Timothy Barton's son and Chasity Hughes is Dustin Barton's girlfriend. Michael Hughes is the uncle of Chasity Hughes.
