Knights Lose Wednesday’s Game to Bulls 6-2
Top Prospect Yoan Moncada Adds Two Hits in Game Three Loss to Division Rival
(DURHAM, NC) -- Yoan Moncada continued his hot hitting, but the Charlotte Knights dropped game three of their four-game series to the Durham Bulls by a score of 6-2 on Wednesday from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC. The first place Bulls increased their lead in the International League South Division to two games over the Knights.
Moncada, the number one prospect in the Chicago White Sox system, finished Wednesday’s contest 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The talented 21-year-old Cuban native has hit safely in five of six games this season and is batting .387 (12-for-31) on the year.
Overall, the Knights combined to record five hits on the night as they lost for the third time in as many days to the Bulls. After slugging 60 hits over their first four games of the season, the Knights have recorded just 15 hits over their last three games. Charlotte won all four of those games at home.
RHP Carson Fulmer (1-1, 5.73) allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits over five innings and was saddled with the game three loss for the Knights. Fulmer walked one batter, fanned three, and allowed a three-run home run to Mike Marjama in the fourth inning.
Marjama, who also homered on Tuesday, finished the game 1-for-3 with the home run and three RBIs. Durham third baseman Patrick Leonard added the team’s other three runs on a three-run double in the third inning. Leonard had three hits on the evening and finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Durham RHP Chih-Wei Hu (1-0, 1.64) started and was very effective over six innings of work. Hu, the number five prospect in Tampa Bay’s system, allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings. He walked one batter and struck-out five. Relievers Jeff Ames (2.0 IP) and Andrew Kittredge (1.0 IP) did not allow a run over the final three innings.
Charlotte RHP David Holmberg continued his solid start to the 2017 campaign. Holmberg tossed three scoreless, hitless innings. For the season, Holmberg has not allowed a run in two appearances (6.2 IP).
The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Thursday with the finale from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. RHP Lucas Giolito (0-0, 8.31) will start for the Knights against RHP Taylor Guerrieri (1-0, 4.76) for the Bulls.
