CHAPEL HILL, NC (WBTV) -

A forceful torrent of raw emotion rushed down Franklin Street moments before the final buzzer ever sounded.

Monday night’s big win for the UNC Tar Heels brings a renewed sense of pride, and that ignited a flurry of fans that numbered well into the thousands to vent in jubilation over the victory against Gonzaga.

UNC Senior Carley Berkinblit said, “It’s unreal we won. We’re the best in country.”

Some call it vindication from a disappointing loss that came against Villanova in last year’s title game, and others see it as a moment of hard wood redemption.
Regardless of the interpretation there’s no denying that Chapel Hill is home of the national champs.

Frenzied moments are understood when you consider this is the third NCAA basketball championship in the last 12 years. UNC won it all in 2005 and 2009.

Bon fires after crowning moments in the streets are a given, as are shirts declaring that the heels are number one. The wearable bragging rights are hot off the presses, and included in these festivities on Franklin are go boom in the sky.

Rickey Ivey who made the drive to Chapel Hill from Charlotte told WBTV, “It’s one of the best moments of my life. Number 6. It’s one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.”

Coach Roy Williams is expected to return Tuesday afternoon for a victory celebration at the Dean Smith Center.
