BLOG: Major weather pattern change as snow enters forecast

We're looking at a major change to our weather pattern as we head into the weekend:

  • Friday night: Freeze Warning foothills and Piedmont locations
  • Saturday Night: Winter Storm Watch for NC mountains
  • Sunday Morning: First Alert Day for morning snow in the Charlotte Metro

First up are freezing temperatures as we head overnight and into Saturday morning. A freeze warning has been issued for most areas North and North West of the Charlotte metro.

With cold air locked in place across the Carolinas our attention will next turn to a winter storm coming in for Saturday night and early Sunday morning. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for mountain locations in the WBTV viewing area. And right now that’s where the heaviest snow is expected to fall. Most mountain locals are forecast to see snow amounts in the 3 to 6-inch range.

Here in the Charlotte area and across much of the Piedmont snow is now in the forecast for the early Sunday morning time frame. Timing would snow into Charlotte at around 4 a.m. and have it exiting later Sunday morning. Again, this is not a huge snow in terms of accumulations. But one, possibly two inches of snow is certainly a possibility in the Charlotte area.

Bottom line: Confidence is high on an accumulating snow for the mountains and foothills. And we are gaining confidence in at least some accumulating snow here in metro Charlotte region. We will continue to give you our best forecast as this system evolves during the day on Saturday.
