First Alert: Possible weekend snow in mountains

(WBTV) -

A Regional First Alert Day has been issued due to a weather system that could possibly bring significant mountain snow to the Carolinas later this week.

Sharply colder air drains down into the region with highs in the 50s Saturday and only in the 40s on Sunday. A low-pressure system will also keep things unsettled.

Most of Saturday will be dry but Saturday night and through at least the first half of Sunday will bring wet weather and possibly some significant mountain snow (4-6").

The foothills and Catawba Valley also stand to get a couple inches and we're monitoring the Piedmont and greater Charlotte region to determine if any light snow might accumulate.

Right now this looks like a cold rain for the Charlotte area, but a quick early morning burst of snow is not out of the question if the moisture can line up with the window of sub-freezing air early in the morning before temps rise above freezing.

Stay tuned for more details as this weekend event unfolds.
