Molly's Kids: Sadie Turns 1! (And her parents have a request)

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Sadie lives in Albemarle. She was born with Sanfilippo Syndrome, known as “Childhood Alzheimer's.” It is a cruel disease that takes your child away from you in front of your eyes. It is the same disease Abby Grace has, another one of our #MollysKids.

We first met Sadie last October in this post: http://tinyurl.com/SadieHaywoodMKs.

Her first birthday, usually a milestone for parents, is bittersweet for Ashley and Jason Haywood.

“We know she is getting ever closer to the age when the disease begins to take hold,” Ashley said. “The disease works on her every second, but children really start falling behind at age two and regressing by age three.”

Without treatment, Sadie’s future will be dementia, a wheelchair, a feeding tube, and death in her teens.

Today, however, Sadie is happy.

“She is normal,” Ashley says. "She's hitting all her marks."

Because of what’s ahead, Sadie’s family is using today to raise funds for critical research to hopefully find treatment options. Clinical trials out there now show great progress in children with Sanfilippo. The problem is the trials are not adequately funded, and they can only accept a few children at a time.

“We are fighting to make the clinical trials more accessible to children like Sadie,” Ashley said. “This is her only hope for a future. It’s the only hope for many of these kids battling this devastating illness.”

You can find out more on the Saving Sadie Rae: Our Quest to Cure Sanfilippo page, or by going to www.SadieTurns1.com

Or, you can just share their little girl and help get the word out.

They're trying to give the best birthday present of all – LIFE.

*Editor’s note: This is about one of #MollysKids, children WBTV Anchor Molly Grantham follows closely on her Facebook page. It was first
published there – which is why it’s written in a personal way. For years Molly has followed hundreds of kids with uphill medical battles. Find this story (and updates on all #MollysKids) here.

Today is Sadie Haywood’s birthday. She’s turning 1, in case you didn’t notice her hat.
