With college basketball in the books and the Masters about to tee off on Thursday, time to get excited here in Charlotte for the Wells Fargo Championship, but wait...
For the first time in the last 15 years, a PGA event will not happen in the month of May here in Charlotte.
The Wells Fargo Championship will be played at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington from May 1-7.
Of course, the trade off is the PGA Championship will be at the Quail Hollow Club in August so I'm not complaining. Not one bit...
Every year, the WFC always seems to attract one of the best and toughest fields on all of the PGA tour but there is no question, the PGA Championship WILL attract the best field in all of golf for one simple reason. It's the last chance for golfers to win a major championship this season and that is what EVERY golfer in the world plays for. It's what drives them everyday.
That alone should have every golf fan excited about what is to come in August. We will get to see the best, up close and personal try to add to their legacy in the sport of golf.
But it still just won't feel right in the Queen City during the first week of May not seeing Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, Jim Furyk, Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, and the likes walking the fairways of Quail Hollow on a beautiful 70 something afternoon.
It won't be right not hearing the roar on #15 and you are sitting at the end of the "Green Mile" on #18. Someone is making a charge up the leaderboard. Who is it?
No worries! The event will be back in Charlotte in May of 2018 so all will return to normal. But it may be worth taking the drive down to Wilmington to get your spring time PGA golf fix and then double up come August as the Wanamaker Trophy will be handed out at the end of the PGA Championship right here in Charlotte, NC.
Not a bad trade off in 2017.
