BLOG: Let's not forget about NCAA Division 2 tournament action

The month of March is pretty much known for wall to wall, do or die basketball.  One bad night and it is time to get that spring break trip planned.  And that pressure extends into division 2 basketball where we have 5 local teams with hopes of winning a National Championship.

Ladies first....

Johnson C. Smith is back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2012.  The newly crowned CIAA champs will take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the Atlantic Regional.  That game will take place on Friday in California, PA.

Coach Stephen Joyner Jr's team has won 7 of their last 8 games and are peaking at the right time as they take a 22-7 record into Friday's game.

And in what seems like a yearly trip, the ladies at Wingate are back in the tournament for the 3rd straight season after winning the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.  They will take on Kings in Columbus, GA on Friday.

This is Wingate's 15th trip to the NCAA tournament which leads the SAC.  They have made it to the Elite 8 three times (1995, 1996, 2008).

On the men's side of things, Queens will host the Southeast Regional at Curry Arena starting Saturday.

The newly crowned SAC champs will host SAC rival Wingate Saturday at 5:30.

The Royals have lost only 3 games all season, BUT 2 of those have been to Wingate.  These 2 teams have already played 3 times this season with Wingate owning the advantage, but Queens did beat Wingate last week in the conference tournament and need to do it one more time to survive and advance.  One thing is for sure, neither team will do anything the other has NOT seen.

Last but not least, Pfeiffer is back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2005.  And in typical Falcons fashion, they are doing it with one of the best offenses in the nation.

This edition of the Falcons is averaging 104 points per game which is #1 in division 2 basketball.  This is the 5th time this program has led the nation in scoring.

Coach Jeremy Currier's team will take on Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 2:30 at Queens.

So, in the excitement of what will be going on in division 1 basketball, let's not forget, we have some local teams with legit shots at cutting down the nets in Sioux Falls, SD in the case of the men and in Columbus, OH for the women.

Good luck to all of our local teams.  We will be watching...
