The City of St. Louis has been awarded a $1 Million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Department to help house homeless residents.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay announced Tuesday the year-long renewable grant will serve up to 150 men and woman throughout the St. Louis area. This is the largest rapid re-housing grant the City has ever received.

The grant will allow people seeking services through the City’s Continuum of Care to be immediately moved into homes and apartments.

The Housing First model puts first priority in providing safe and reliable housing before tackling issues that led them to become homeless.

“Most people who fall into homelessness and end up on St. Louis’s streets do not have serious or chronic mental illness and do not require permanent support. They may have lost a job, missed utilities payments, had their power shut off, and were put out of their apartment,” said Mayor Slay.

"More than half the people who are street homeless in the city of St. Louis don't have chronic mental illness or substance addictions," Eddie Roth, St. Louis' Director of Human Services, said. "They have smaller problems that if we work quickly to bring them into housing they can get off the street and stay off the streets indefinitely."

Rapid re-housing partners including St. Patrick Center, Gateway 180, and Biddle House Opportunities Center will help connect resources, along with referrals and meals to aid homelessness.

In addition to providing housing, the grant will provide rent assistance, case management, and supportive counseling.
