Man arrested after deadly assault at gas station near uptown Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A man has been arrested after police say he was involved in a deadly assault at a gas station near uptown Charlotte early Tuesday morning.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they were called around 3:30 a.m. to an assault with a deadly weapon at the 7-Eleven on N. Tryon Street, where they found a man suffering from "apparent trauma."

The man went to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.  His name has still not been released by police.

After an investigation, 45-year-old Kevin Hedgepeth was arrested and charged with murder, Tuesday night. He is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Tuesday evening police released a photo of a man police say witnessed the deadly assault. According to police, the man “frequents the area of N. Tryon Street and Dalton Avenue.”
