Teacher charged with indecent liberties with a student in Gaston Co.

A Gaston County teacher has been charged with indecent liberties with a student after investigators say a relationship was reported between the two.

Twenty-three-year-old Stewart Oakley Rice was arrested Tuesday and booked in the Gaston County jail.

The arrest comes after Gaston County Police told WBTV they were investigating a possible inappropriate relationship between a teacher and a student.

Gaston County Police began investigating when the School Resource Officer was approached by a staff member at North Gaston High saying information had surfaced about a teacher involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student.

“When we were made aware of the situation, we began working with the Gaston County Police Department on an investigation," school district officials told WBTV. "Because this situation relates to personnel, we cannot provide details about the investigation.  It is our procedure that whenever allegations related to an employee or a student are brought to our attention, we immediately begin an investigation and also rely on the police to conduct an investigation.  We are taking the situation seriously and will continue to cooperate with the police."

Police officials say Rice was interviewed and cooperated with the investigation. The female juvenile was also interviewed during the investigation.

Stewart Rice turned himself in at the Gaston County Magistrate’s Office Tuesday, given a $25,000 bond and released on a written promise to appear.

According to the school district, Rice is a social studies teacher and the Boys' Junior Varsity Basketball Coach. He has been with the school since August 2015. Officials say he has been suspended with pay and has no previous suspension or demotions on his record.

Anyone with further information is asked to call the Gaston County Police at 704-866-3320 or Crimestoppers at 704-861-8000.
