Molly's Kids: Lincoln County girl helping others

A healthy Lincoln County girl helping others who are not as lucky as her.

Hattie Killian is 8 years old. While recently cleaning out her room, she decided to donate her books to children in the hospital. She asked her mom for help, so mom Leslie got in touch with Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital and Levine Children's Hospital.

Both hospitals said all donations had to be new.

It only made Hattie more determined. She went to her principal at St James Elementary School in Denver and asked for assistance. This week, the school is holding a book AND flashlight drive for Hattie to donate all items. Why flashlights? Because Hattie says when she’s scared or can’t sleep, she reads by flashlight to keep her mind busy. She thinks that will help other kids as well.

She’s calling this effort the “Be The Light” Drive.

She's now opening up the drive to the community. She’ll be collecting through Thanksgiving. Drop off locations are here:

  • The Red Barn Marketplace at 1612 N. Hwy 16 in Denver
  • Expressions Dance Studio at 1315 S. Hwy 16 in Stanley
  • Email Leslie ( to make other arrangements

Hattie is taking donations until Saturday, November 26th at 5 p.m.

Love and kindness from a 3rd-grader, with no strings attached.
