“Speak Out” is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Scott Dempsey.
We finally got a plan. Recently the Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board unanimously passed Phase 1 of the district's new student assignment plan.
The hope is the schools will be more diverse and offer a better education for many.
Next year the district will use a family's income, neighborhood, and the level of the parents' education to determine which magnet schools students will attend.
Phase 1 will establish about 9 new special programs and create roughly 13 thousand more magnet seats for students over the next 4 years.
We wish more seats could have opened up - but the district says adjustments will be made if need be.
People in the community as well as some of our elected leaders have criticized this plan.
Some valid concerns. We believe those concerns could have been brought up sooner. After all the school board has been working on this plan for the past 18 months.
We say next time parents, politicians, and taxpayers - don't wait until the last minute to make your voice known.
The quality of our Children's education is on the line.
And they deserve our undivided attention.
There's no time to waste.
There's another chance for all to get involved - the board will soon work on Phase 2 of the student assignment plan.
That phase deals with improving and diversifying neighborhood schools.
