CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - There's a burglar with a pick axe who police would like to identify. He recently broke into the Quick Stop convenience store on Central Avenue at 7:20 a.m.
Surveillance video showed him outside the building, walking around with a pick axe in hand. CMPD Detective Tori Roddey says there was a hole in the store wall that had been boarded up.
"He definitely knew there was some plywood on the back of the store and all he had to do was use the pick axe to pry his way in."
Once inside, surveillance shows him sneaking around the counter and finding a cash register. At this point, he figures there might be cameras so, he pulls his sweater up over his face. He then uses the pick axe to pry open the cash drawer.
"He gets the money and while he's also checking around, he's going to see that the owner of the business had left his gun right underneath that cash register."
With a stolen gun in one hand and a glove on the other, he rummages through the cigarette drawers to find his brand of smokes.
"He's getting two packs of Newport cigarettes which we know is the choice of most criminals."
But there's one more cash register to tackle before he's finished. Unlike the first, this one proves to be a tough nut to crack. He can't seem to get it open, so he uses the pick axe to bash the cash drawer to bits. The irony is, someone was watching his every move.
"The actual owner has the video connected to his house, so he saw the guy."
That owner called police who couldn't get there in time to catch him.
